Crash Recovery Systems connects seamless with future eCall developments

In 2014 all new vehicles must be equipped with eCall: a black box in the vehicle that automatically connects with the emergency alarm center after a crash. During this process, important information about the location , speed and drive direction is transmitted directly to the alarm center. Also, information about deployed airbags and number of occupants is included.

Since the initiative in 2005, Moditech is an active member of the European board that is responsible for the eCall developments in Europe. Recently Moditech signed the European Memorandum of Understanding describing the standards for future eCall development. Part of Moditech goals is to establish a direct link between the Crash Recovery System and the eCall information reveived from the crashed vehicle by the Alarm Center When a vehicle in which an airbag has been activated 'calls', a link to the Crash Recovery System with all relevant information of the vehicle is established. This way victims can be extricated safely and quickly because the rescue workers have real-time information of all safety systems in the vehicle and their current state, as well as the number of occupants, etc.

ECALL AND THE CRASH RECOVERY SYSTEM
In the European Community thousends of people die in traffic accidents. It is estimated that the eCall system can save 2,500 lives every year. On top of that, the annual cost of traffic accidents in the European economy exceeds 160 billion euro. The eCall system can help to reduce these costs by saving lives. The initiative was started in 2005. The car manufacturers and the European Commission jointly agreed to implement eCall in the whole European area. As a result of this agreement, in 2014 the eCall system becomes mandatory for all countries in Europe.

Recently Moditech signed the 'European Memorandum of Understanding' as a member of the European board. With support of car manufacturers, telecom providers, governments and insurance companies this Memorandum is the starting point of the common European realisation of the eCall system.

With eCall, important information like the exact location of the crash, the identity of the owner/driver and the make and model of vehicle, is quickly transmitted during a ‘call’. The alarm center can forward this data automatically to the First Responders so that the rescue workers arrive well-informed at the crash scene. In the case of a heavy crash every minute of the Golden Hour is of vital importance and may save lives!

The information of the Crash Recovery System combined with eCall ensures that rescue workers can arrive prepared on the spot quickly and easy. They know up front all the locations and deactivation procedures of dangerous safety components!

ADVANTAGES ECALL AND CRS
The two main advantages of eCall are:

1.) eCall will reduce the notification time of accidents, and therewith reduce the emergency service response time.

2.) Reduction of the total extrication time is achieved when eCall data is used to retrieve real time Vehicle Safety Information from CRS. This leads to a reduction of the social burden of road accidents by improving the notification of such accidents, therewith speeding up the emergency service response and lowering the subsequent effects on fatalities, severity of injuries and traffic flows. Moditech is proud to contribute significantly to this development.
