The Fire Protection Research Foundation, an independent nonprofit whose mission is to plan, manage and communicate research in support of the US-based National Fire Protection Association, has prepared several reports on research projects they conducted on extrication related topics. These reports may also be of interest to emergency responders in other parts of the world, and Moditech would like to spread the word.

  • The first report is "Fire Fighter Safety and Emergency Response for Electric Drive and Hybrid Electric Vehicles". The report was released in May, 2010 and summarizes emergency responder concerns regarding the general safety issues associated with those vehicles.
  • Another project report titled "Assessment of Powered Rescue Tool Capabilities with High-Strength Alloys and Composite Materials" and published in October 2011 focuses on the challenges of rescue tools with the advanced materials used in the latest generation of passenger cars.
  • The report "Personal Protective Equipment for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles" summarizes the results of a workshop that involved emergency responders and other stakeholders coming together to develop guidelines and recommended best practices to address the proper PPE for emergencies involving hybrid or electric vehicles. This report focuses on minimizing the risk to emergency responders due to hazards involving electrically energized equipment.
  • A report issued in May 2013 describes NFPA's "Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Safety Training for Emergency Responders". The goal of this project was to provide comprehensive awareness and emergency response training to first responders to prepare them for the widespread availability of advanced electric vehicles. The report describes the efforts taken to meet these objectives.
  • The latest report titled "Emergency Response to Incident Involving Electric Vehicle Battery Hazards" has just been published and discusses the key findings of full-scale testing of large format Lithium-Ion batteries in regards to best practices for emergency response procedures for such incidents.
After reviewing any of these reports, you will agree that it is more important than ever for rescuers to know what's inside…
